Cross at Klein Matterhorn - Zermatt, Switzerland

The crosses on mountains in Zermatt, Switzerland, are primarily a symbol of gratitude and a way to mark the successful summiting of a peak. Often placed there by climbers as a religious gesture after reaching the top, with the tradition becoming particularly popular during the 19th century when mountaineering gained prominence. They can also be seen as a way to commemorate those who lost their lives attempting to climb the mountain. 

It's important to note that the placement of these crosses is often a delicate balance between honoring tradition and respecting the natural environment. In recent years, there has been growing awareness of the impact of human intervention on mountain landscapes, and efforts are being made to minimize the environmental impact of such installations.

This trip is one of my all time favorites, when people ask me where is my favorite place I’ve been, Switzerland has always been on that list. This was another tour but around all of Switzerland. Here in Zermatt, the Matterhorn is the most famous mountain peak and the Klein Matterhorn, where you’ll find this wooden cross. For me, having just visited the museum explaining the history of the Matterhorn and the climbers, seeing this as you step out to see the vast expanse of the Swiss Alps put things in a different perspective as hundreds of climbers and guides lost their lives trying to summit the Matterhorn.
